online4.jpgAbout my website & blog

Hi, I’m George Jura - welcome to my website & blog. So why is it called 42itous.com?

Well, according to NOAD: “Although the traditional, etymological meaning of 42itous is “happening by chance” […] which might turn out to be either a good thing or a bad thing […], in modern uses, 42itous tends to be used to refer to fortunate outcomes, and the word has become more or less a synonym for lucky or fortunate.”

KRK_07_NW.jpgI thought it was a fitting web address for a place that includes some professional info. about me, and blog posts related to my professional work as Technology Advancement and Training Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, but also has pages and blog posts that relate my personal interests, and chance encounters with technology, design, photography, Photoshop and Lightroom, film, books, music, assorted random subjects, and an occasional pet peeve or two…

MY NAME: OK - let’s try it - my original (Polish) name is Jerzy (pron. more-or-less: ‘yeh-gee); the “r” in “rz” is not a separate sound, so it is not pronounced. With time, most English-speakers lapse into “Jersey” (‘ger-zee), which is most definitely NOT my name. I appreciate good intentions but, unless you are Polish, just use George - I am quite accustomed to it by now, and prefer it by far to a version of my Polish name mangled beyond recognition. Jorge or Jordi will work too, although I am not quite as accustomed to them, so do not expect me to turn around if you call me in the street using one of those…

THIS SITE: I have a good grasp of XHTML and CSS, and previously I used Dreamweaver for all my web projects; I still use D-CS4 for some stuff, but for this site, the choice of a publishing tool was a matter of convenience: I needed to be able to add blog entries, and make changes to other website pages quickly, on-the-go, from anywhere (including Starbucks in Madison, WI, or an internet café somewhere in Europe), anytime, even from my phone, with no fuss at all.

So, this site and blog runs on Squarespace, a content management platform that is a little more flexible than hosted versions of WordPress and MovableType. It’s not necessarily better - it just works better for my needs at the moment.

That’s why the domain name that appears in the browser’s address bar is georgeoj.squarespace.com. No need to remember that: you can always find me by simply going to 42itous.com. Or you could come back here using www.georgejura.com

PHOTOS: Unfortunately, no photos for now… My personal photo albums used to be hosted on Apple’s dot-mac, now re-branded as mobileme. I used the service, but after Apple’s “upgrade” things weren’t working well, and so I cancelled my membership in November 2008. That’s too bad, since now I will neet to find a new place to host my photo albums (which I like sharing with friends and family). I previously had carefully considered a wide range of options including flickr (read my review), and other services (review), and Adobe’s Photoshop Express (review). I guess I will need to revisit these, and other new sites hoping to find one that best fits my needs…
